The Honors and High Honors Options in Economics

The Economics Department has two honors programs: Honors in Economics and High Honors in Economics.

Honors in Economics

Honors in Economics is automatically awarded to economics majors who maintain a 3.5 average or better in all economics and business courses. There is no formal application for honors in economics. Honors does NOT appear on your transcript.

High Honors in Economics

This program is intended to (1) increase the depth and breadth of mathematical, statistical, accounting, and communication skills, (2) provide the basic skills for students to do research and writing in economics, and (3) provide an opportunity to "work as an economist" while at college.

High Honors in Economics also requires a 3.5 average or better in all economics and business courses, but high honors also requires that students take the honors seminar, ECON 392W, and obtain a grade of A minus or better. The main goal of this course is to write a senior thesis that will be reviewed by a committee.

In recognition of their achievements, all students successfully completing the requirements shall receive designation of "High Honors" on their transcript. In addition, if so desired by the student, the Professor will write a letter of recommendation describing the program and the student's work and achievements to graduate schools and potential employers.

The Honors Seminar: ECON 392W

The main goal of this course is to help students develop their senior thesis. The course will also enhance students' quantitative background.

Students must have taken ECON 201, ECON 202 and ECON 382 (or BUS 384) prior to enrolling for the Honors Seminar. Students must have a B or above in their economics and business courses. The class size is limited to 20. Enrollment in ECON 392W is by permission of the department only - it will appear as "closed" in CUNYFirst.
